Preoperative systemic immune-inflammation index predicts prognosis of patients with non-metastatic renal cell carcinoma: a propensity score-matched analysis

Abstract: Background A novel systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), based on the neutrophils, lymphocytes and platelet counts, is associated with the prognosis of several cancers. The present study evaluates the prognostic significance of SII in non-metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Method The present study retrospectively reviewed the medical record of patients with non-metastatic RCC who underwent nephrectomy between 2010 and 2013. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed to identi… Show more

“…The association between and SII was also reported in other solid tumors [23,32]. For example, Hu et al analyzed 646 non-metastatic renal cell carcinoma patients treated with nephrectomy and found high SII (> 529) as an independent predictor of CSS (HR = 2.17, 95% CI 1.33-3.55, p = 0.002) and OS (HR = 2.26, 95% CI 1.44-3.54, p < 0.001) [32]. Also, in a recent meta-analysis of eight studies, Zhang et al determined high SII as a prognostic factor for worse OS (HR = 1.79, 95% CI 1.33-2.42, p < 0.001) in breast cancer patients [23].…”

“…This is contradictory to the recent study of Stangl-Kremser et al who did not find a significant association between SII > 200 and overall survival in the CRPC cohort treated with docetaxel (HR 1.0, 95% CI 0.9-1.0, p = 0.06) [21]. “…The included studies were published from 2016 to 2020, with a sample size between 70 and 646 and a cut-off value of SII between 200 and 1375. Of them, six studies assessed the relationship between SII and prognosis in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) patients, [19,[22][23][24][25][26] two investigated upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC), [20,27] two focused on bladder cancer (BC), [28,29] and three explored PC. [18,30,31] In terms of the research quality evaluation, the NOS score was 9 for three datasets, 8 for six datasets, 7 for one dataset, and 6 for ve datasets, demonstrating that the included articles were overall of high quality.…”

“…Recently, there have been many inflammation-based prognostic biomarkers which constructed on systemic inflammatory responses, such as the Glasgow Prognostic Score (GPS) and modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS), Prognostic Index (PI), Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (LMR), and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII). These biomarkers have shown prognostic value in several types of cancer, including lung cancer, 9 , 10 biliary tract cancer, 11 renal cell carcinoma, 12 esophageal cancer, 13 and CRC. 14 Our previous study illustrated that preoperative fibrinogen (Fib) to pre-albumin (pre-Alb) ratio (FPR) was tightly associated with chemotherapy response and the outcome of advanced CRC.…”
