Preparation and Activation of Complexes of the Type [((mesityl)NCH2CH2)2NX]ZrMe2 (X = H, Me) with [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] or [PhNMe2H][B(C6F5)4]

Abstract: The zirconium dimethyl complexes [N2NX]ZrMe2 (N2NX = [(MesNCH2CH2)2NX]; Mes = mesityl; X = H (1a), Me (1b)), have “mer” structures in the solid state in which the amido nitrogens occupy “axial” positions in a trigonal bipyramid. The reaction of 1b with 1 equiv of [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] followed by addition of diethyl ether yielded the ether adduct {[N2NMe]ZrMe(Et2O)}+ (with [B(C6F5)4]- as the anion), an X-ray study of which revealed it to be a fac trigonal-bipyramidal species in which the diethyl ether is coordinate… Show more

“…All nitrogen atoms are coordinated trigonal planar (sum of all angles: N1: 359.7°, N2: 359.7°, N3: 359.6°). The Zr–N bonds are of comparable length (Zr1–N1 2.048(2) Å, Zr1–N2 2.054(2) Å, Zr1–N3 2.064(3) Å) and in agreement with comparable known complexes, as well as the Zr1–C73 bond (2.286(3) Å). , …”

“…The Zr–C distances of 2.226(2) Å are comparable with those in complexes such as [(κ 3‑ t Bu NON)ZrMe 2 ] ( t Bu NON = O{C 6 H 4 (N t Bu- o )} 2 ) (2.235(5) Å and 2.280(5) Å), [(κ 3 -N 2 NMe)ZrMe 2 ] (N 2 NMe = (MesNCH 2 CH 2 ) 2 NMe; Mes = mesityl) (2.240(7) Å and 2.265(7) Å), and other dimethyl zirconium complexes with bisamido supporting ligands {2.233(6)–2.294(5) Å} . The Zr–N distances of 2.135(1) Å are shorter than the corresponding distances in 1 , perhaps due to reduced steric hindrance.…”

“…This behavior is in contrast to that of the related bis-(amido)amine zirconium complexes of the type [N 2 NX]ZrMe 2 (C) reported by Schrock et al, which exhibit bis(amido)amino coordination. 19 In these latter compounds the Zr-N(amido) (2.095(6) Å) and Zr-N(amino) (2.380(6) Å) bonds are almost identical in length to those in 1 and 2, but with the notable exception that the donor bond formed by the sp 3 -hybridized amine atom is static.…”
