Preparation and Characterization of a Novel PVA/PVP Hydrogel Containing Entrapped Hydrogen Peroxide for Agricultural Applications

Abstract: Damage and loss of crops and plants caused by pathogens are global problems that have major effects on the food supply of many countries. Environmentally friendly viricide approaches are gaining in popularity to combat these problems. This study proposes the use of environmentally friendly hydrogen peroxide (HP) as a pesticide entrapped in a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) hydrogel for controlled release in agricultural applications. The hydrogel was prepared as a matrix of PVA and PVP co… Show more

“…The main advantage of PVA is its ability to form inter and intra molecular hydrogen bonding with chitosan 35 . Recently, a novel PVA/poly (N‐vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) hydrogel was reported by Malka et al for entrapment and release of hydrogen peroide 36 . Polyurethane (PU) hydrogels were also prepared by varying molar mass of poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) and investigated their effect on tomato growth.…”

“…FTIR/ATR Spectra of PVA/PVP Hydrogels FTIR/ATR spectroscopy was used to assess the chemical composition of the hydrogels. The characteristics of PVA/PVP and PVA/PVP/HP (Figure 3 blue and red, respectively) were investigated by FTIR/ATR and compared in our recent manuscript [25]. The addition of thymol to the hydrogel significantly contributes to hydrogen bond interactions, as the thymol phenolic hydroxyl group [27] (O-H stretching at 3300-3360 cm −1 ) can interact with the PVP carbonyl or the PVA hydroxyl group (Figure 1B, C).…”

“…To evaluate the hydrogel contribution to HP thermal stability, HP was compared with HP entrapped in PVA/PVP hydrogel, both containing 10 w% HP. As the TGA-MS detector cannot distinguish between the oxygen that originates from HP decomposition products and water vapor, the potassium permanganate titration method [25] was applied. PVA/PVP/HP hydrogel coatings with size and weight of 4 cm 2 and 59 ± 4 mg, respectively, and HP solutions with weight of 66 mg were incubated in an air-forced laboratory oven preset to isothermal 82 • C for accelerated HP decomposition [26].…”

“…15 Since its discovery in Jordan and Israel in 2014 and 2015, 14,16 respectively, ToBRFV spread to other countries, including Germany, the United States, Turkey, and China. 11,12 ToBRFV causes significant economic damage to the tomato crops, which are one of the important crops grown worldwide. 11,13 The tobacco plant Nicotiana glutinosaproduces a hypersensitive response (HR) when infected with ToBRFV, 13 resulting in necrotic local lesions (LLs) that isolate the virus and prevent it from spreading throughout the plant.…”

“…Similarly, viruses can also cause disease and food spoilage. The tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV) is a newly discovered plant virus that belongs to the tobamovirus family and can cause disease in tomatoes and pepper varieties lacking L resistant alleles . Since its discovery in Jordan and Israel in 2014 and 2015, , respectively, ToBRFV spread to other countries, including Germany, the United States, Turkey, and China. , …”
