Preparation and Characterization of Footwear Soling Materials Based on Biodegradable Polyurethane

Abstract: The aim of this research work is to prepare biodegradable polyurethane composites and study their physical, mechanical, thermal and biodegradation properties. Rigid biodegradable polyester based polyurethane was synthesized by reacting excess of isocyanate with poly(ε-caprolactone) diol to obtain prepolymer which was then reacted with chain extender. Polyurethane composites are prepared with nanoclay and titanium(IV)oxide nanopowder in different concentrations and PU containing 2% W/W of nanopowder had shown b… Show more

“…The aim was to assess their resistance in soil, rather than their degradability (Urgun- et al 2007) . But the same procedure can be followed to study the susceptibility of PUF to biodegradation and the samples can be assessed for weight loss, tensile strength, and molecular break down (Gnanasundaram et al 2015).…”

“…The pre-polymer method was used to prepare polyurethane because this method is currently used by footwear insole/sole manufacturing industries and shoe manufacturing industries to develop insoles by reaction injection molding (RIM) technique (Gnanasundaram et al 2015). The synthesis was carried out in a 250 ml glass reactor at normal pressure and agitation rate 500 rpm (by standard tri-blade impeller) to ensure homogeneous mixing.…”

“…Tensile properties signify the durability of a sole [11]. It was believed that materials with low tensile strength and elongation may crack or break due to flexing [3].…”

“…This will affect the shape of the sole i.e. sole is worn out hence, making it uncomfortable for walking [3]. The DIN abrasion test was conducted to predict the wearing resistance of the composite which also corresponds to the life expectancy of the sole.…”
