Preparation and characterization of nanoclay‐filled polyurethane/polypropylene blends

Abstract: Ester-based thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) nanocomposites were prepared by melt blending at 1908C, using 3 wt% Cloisite 10A (organically modified montmorillonite clay) as the nanoscale reinforcement [TPU(C10A)]. The nanocomposites were subsequently melt-blended with polypropylene (PP) using maleic anhydride-grafted polypropylene (MA-g-PP) as a compatibilizer [in the ratio of 70/30-TPU/PP, 70/25/5-TPU/PP/ MA-g-PP, 70/25/5-TPU (C10A)/PP/MA-g-PP]. Besides giving substantial increase in modulus, tensile strength… Show more

“…FTIR spectrum of various blends and pure materials in transmittance mode are depicted in Figure . Most prominent peaks in TPU are at 3335, 2949, 1728, 1708 — , and 1640 cm −1 corresponding to hydrogen bonded NH stretching, asymmetric CH 2 stretching, free CO and hydrogen bonded CO, and amide groups, respectively . While in SEBS‐g‐MA, maleic anhydride groups show two CO bands because of the vibrational coupling of these groups.…”

“…It can be seen that the PUSiO 2 hybrid network can enhance the abrasion resistance of NBR greatly. It is well known that the abrasion resistance of PU is excellent [33]. The PU crosslinked by SiO 2 preserves the outstanding abrasion resistance, the Akron abrasion loss of which is 0.45 cm 3 /1.61 km.…”

“…The equilibrium concentration at which the domain size levels off can be considered as the so-called critical micelle concentration (CMC) of compatibilizer, that is, the concentration at which micelles are formed. The CMC has been estimated in separate study by the intersection of the straight lines at the low and high concentration regions, the CMC value for MAg-PP is 5% for this TPU/PP blends [29]. SEM micrographs of chemically etched (PP material was removed by xylene at 80 C) nanoclay (1%, 3%, and 5%) filled ester and ether based TPU/PP/MA-g-PP [70(nano)/25/5] blend system are shown in Figs.…”
