Preparation and characterization of (R)-poly(.beta.-hydroxybutyrate)-poly(.epsilon.-caprolactone) and (R)-poly(.beta.-hydroxybutyrate)-poly(lactide) degradable diblock copolymers

Abstract: Natural-origin (R)-polyOS-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) was degraded by acid-catalyzed methanolysis to form low molecular weight (average DP = 26) stereoisomerically pure PHB chains. The hydroxyl terminus of these polymers was then reacted with AlEta to form a PHB-O-AlEti macroinitiator species. These macroinitiators were then used to carry out the ring-opening polymerizations of c-caprolactone and lactide monomers to prepare PHB-PCL, PHB-d,l-PLA, and PHB-l-PLA A-B diblock copolymers of variable chain segment lengths… Show more

“…This macroinitiator was employed to conduct the ring opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone (CL) or lactide monomers to obtain PHB-PCL and PHB-PLA diblock copolymers. 54 Similarly, elastmeric soft segments of PHO and PCL were combined to prepare semicrystalline PHO-PCL diblock copolymers, in which the crystallinity of the copolymers were also controlled by the lengths of the two different blocks. 55 Consecutive ROP of lactide followed by CL using PHB as a macroinitiator afforded PHB-PLA-PCL triblock copolymers ( Figure 9).…”

“…Reeve et al 58 have prepared P(R)(3HB)ÈPeCL and P(R)(3HB)ÈPL diblock copolymers from lowmolecular-weight (average DP \ 26) poly(hydroxybutyrate) stereoisomers. These have been produced by degradative, acid methanolysis of high-molecularweight PHB.…”
