Preparation and characterization of star polymers with polyurethane cores using polycaprolactone triol

Abstract: Star‐shaped polymers with two different core sizes were prepared by step polymerization. Their structures were confirmed by FTIR and 1H NMR studies. X‐ray diffraction studies showed highly crystallized patterns for this type of star polymer. Thermogravimetric analysis curves displayed an excellent thermal stability and a two‐step degradation mechanism for these materials. In addition, it indicated that if the length of the triol segment were longer, the degradation temperature at 10% weight loss would be highe… Show more

“…Surface morphology of the poled and unpoled samples was studied under an Atomic Force Microscope (model: XE 100) from Park Scientific Instruments Alliance (PSIA), CA, USA with noncontact mode at a scan rate of 1 Hz and scan area of 5 µm. ppm (17,18). The presence of resonance peak at around 8.05 ppm is attributed to the aromatic protons from the MDI unit (17).…”

“…ppm (17,18). The presence of resonance peak at around 8.05 ppm is attributed to the aromatic protons from the MDI unit (17). The peaks at 2.92 and 2.97 ppm are for the protons coming from cyclic saturation of cholesterol, and peaks at around 1.69 to 2.31 for the aliphatic chain of cholesterol (19).…”

“…One of the most promising candidates to full this role is poly(caprolactone triol) (PCLT), having been successfully utilised previously to toughen poly(lactic acid) 11,12 and as a component in various polyurethane systems. 13,14 Furthermore, PCLT is biodegradable, 15 biocompatible, 16 miscible with a wide range of polymers and displays superior UV resistance properties. Although poly(caprolactone) (PCL) is synthesised from petroleum-derived sources, 17 potential exists to prepare PCL precursors from renewable sources, such as glucose and D-fructose.…”
