Preparation and characterization of zirconia oxygen sensors

Abstract: A thimble zirconia oxygen sensor was prepared with YSZ. The surfaces of the Pt electrode, electrolyte and their interface were observed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM).The sensor was examined with engine bench test to evaluate the essential performance. The basic function such as electromotive force output and response time was discussed. The oscillograph trace was also obtained and analyzed with four different frequencies. The experimental results reveal that the oxygen sensor has high performances … Show more

“…To date, oxygen sensor applied for monitoring A/F ratio includes, but not limited to, the potentiometric, limiting current, and conductometric oxygen sensors [6,7,8,9]. Among them, limiting current oxygen sensor gains more attention due to their relative stable signal, wider concentration monitoring range, and satisfactory linear relationship between response signal and oxygen concentration [6].…”

“…Oxygen sensor has been widely used in the diverse fields, such as biology, medicine, automobile manufacturing, energy and chemical industries, and it accounted for ~40% of the total gas sensors. The oxygen sensor is one of the most popular applications as the key component in the emission control system in the automobile industry [1][2]. Oxygen sensor can be divided into three types according to the principle and structure, namely solid electrolyte concentration cell, oxide semiconductor and limiting current oxygen sensors [3,4].…”

“…But the leakage current which comes from the heating element will influence the oxygen sensor's output signal. In order to avoid the electricity leak caused by contingent effects of a short and strong heating pulse current which comes from the heater, using alumina which acts as an insulating layer [1]. Generally using the screen-printing technology to print a layer of alumina on zirconia substrate as insulating layer, in order to ensure the bond strength between the insulating layer and substrate, can be used glass frit as inorganic binder in the alumina slurry.…”
