Preparation and characterizations of antibacterial and electroactive polymeric composites for wound healing applications

Gayathri Unnikrishnan,
Anjumol Joy,
M. Megha
et al.

Abstract: Polymer nanocomposites have been utilized for wound healing applications. Compared to the conventional polymer composites, conducting polymer nanocomposites comprising a blend of biocompatible polymers with electroconductive and antibacterial nanofillers such as graphene‐based nanomaterials and metal/metal oxides, have attracted great attention in this arena due to enhanced physical, electrical and biological characteristics. Herein, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/chitosan (CS)/graphene oxide/zinc oxide electroconduc… Show more

“…1(e)). The peaks positioned around 342 cm À1 , 445 cm À1 and 554 cm À1 could be ascribed to the A 1 (TO), E 2 as well as E 1 modes of ZnO 4,40 respectively, whereas the weak band around 227.5 cm À1 could be attributed to the Ag-O stretching mode of Ag 2 O. 41 The extent of defect formation in graphene materials is obtained from calculating the I D /I G ratio (I D -intensity of the D band; I G -intensity of the G band), and obtaining a higher value for the same denotes increased formation of defects in the given structure.…”

“…Also, the absorption of visible light by the ZnO nanoparticles initiates the production of ROS, which aids in the inhibition of replication of bacterial cells. 4 The Ag 2 O nanoparticles undergo reduction in the presence of dissolved O 2 , and get separated into Ag + ions and ROS. 53 Then, the bacterial membrane destruction is initiated by them, resulting in bacterial cell death and hindrance to their proliferation.…”
