Preparation and Electrochemical Characterization of a Carbon Ceramic Electrode Modified with Ferrocenecarboxylic Acid

Abstract: The present paper describes the characterization of a carbon ceramic electrode modified with ferrocenecarboxylic acid (designated as CCE/Fc) by electrochemical techniques and its detection ability for dopamine. From cyclic voltammetric experiments, it was observed that the CCE/Fc presented a redox pair at Epa = 405 mV and Epc = 335 mV (ΔE = 70 mV), related to the ferrocene/ferrocenium process. Studies showed a considerably increase in the redox currents at the same oxidation potential of ferrocene (Epa = 414 m… Show more

“…The inclusion of ferrocenium ions and presence of polar carboxylic groups-substituted ferrocene moieties within the polymer film improve the charge conductivity of the polymer composite and increase the charge transfer rate. Thus, enhanced kinetic process toward DA determination are attained using PEDOT/ FC1/Au composite compared to other reported composites in the literature [8,22,23,35,36].…”

“…The data show that the matrix of the urine sample did not interfere with the determination of DA and relatively low limits of detection are realized. The DA assay using different modified electrodes is summarized in Table 4 and compared to the present proposed electrodes [8,12,22,33,[35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42]. Table 4 shows that the current sensors have better performance with low detection limit values.…”

“…This was significantly different (p = 10 −6 ) when compared to cleaned/bare electrodes. The drastic loss of current response is likely due to anion exclusion of the negatively charged FcCOO ‐ (as the anionic form of FcCOOH, pKa = 4.2)26 is electrostatically repulsed by dopant anions within the positively charged OO‐PPy film. When comparing the sensitivities of the bare electrode response to the polypyrrole coated electrode response, this ratio is approximately 12:1.…”

“…Furthermore, the capabilities of electron transfer on these three electrodes were also investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and similar conclusions were drawn from cyclic voltammetry. Recently, Skeika and coworkers presented a carbon ceramic electrode prepared by the sol-gel technique and modified with ferrocenecarboxylic acid [ 60 ]. Characterization of a carbon ceramic electrode modified with ferrocenecarboxylic acid (designated as CCE/Fc) was done by electrochemical techniques and its detection ability for dopamine.…”
