“…Similarly, coating the surface layer has been shown to enhance the osteoconductive properties of the metal (e.g. strontium-incorporated Ti oxide, magnesium, calcium phosphate), improving graft integration within the host tissue [24][25][26][27][28][29].…”

“…Previous studies demonstrated similar results where cells on Mg containing surfaces showed higher proliferation and differentiation compared to Mg-free specimens. 30,38,39 Furthermore, Mg ions are considered to be beneficial for bone cell attachment. Zreiqat et al 23 reported that cells grown on Mg-modified alumina exhibited a significantly increased adhesion since binding of integrins to specific ligands depends on the presence of divalent cations.…”

“…30 In this study, the coating adhesion was investigated by a scratch test and via insertion experiments with coated zirconia screw implants. Figure 4 shows representative top views of the sample surface before (a) to (c) and after (d) to (e) scratch test carried out with a sharpened bovine femur, where the dashed black lines correspond to the scratch path.…”

“…β-TCP, M 2 S and MS ceramic discs with dimensions of 8 mm×0.8 mm were prepared as described previously [8,11,12]. The ceramic discs were sonicated for 5 min, rinsed with distilled water and radiosterilized.…”

“…Ni et al [10] and Xie et al [11] reported a new magnesium-silicate ceramic, forsterite (Mg 2 SiO4, M 2 S), then demonstrated its good biocompatibility and mechanical properties. Our previous work reported another new magnesium-silicate ceramic, clinoenstatite (MgSiO 3 , MS), and revealed that the ionic products of the MS powder extracts can promote the proliferation of mouse fibroblasts (L929 cell); and the murine embryonic mesenchymal stem cells adhered well; higher proliferation capacities on the clinoenstatite ceramics were also observed than that on the traditional hydroxyapatite ceramics [12].…”
