Preparation and Polymerization of Benzaldehyde Formaldehyde Azine (1-Phenyl-2,3-diaza-1,3-butadiene)

Abstract: Benzaldehyde formaldehyde azine (BzFAz) was prepared as a new monomer having CN bonds, and its polymerizability was investigated by using several initiators. Polymers were obtained from BzFAz by polymerizations initiated by trifluoroacetic acid (CF3COOH), butyllithium (n-C4H9Li), and methylmagnesium iodide (CH3MgI). The structures of these polymers were investigated by elemental analysis, IR, Raman, and 1H NMR spectroscopies. The polymers obtained by CF3COOH and by n-C4H9Li consisted of 3,4-units, whereas tha… Show more

“…However, BzFAz, prepared by pyrolysis of the polymer under vacuum, could be isolated as solutions, and was relatively stable for several hours. 51 In solution, BzFAz could be polymerized with cationic and anionic initiators. The structure of the polymer was dependent on the polymerization conditions.…”

“…Azine compounds have attracted considerable interest in several areas: in medical and biological applications, 1,2 in the preparations of metal complexes 3,4 and in some other applications. 5,6 Over past decades, liquid crystalline and photoluminescent liquid crystalline materials have attracted remarkable attention and interest due to their major contribution to the modern technology of LCDs. Over the past three years, a wide range of liquid crystalline or photoluminescent liquid crystalline compounds with fascinating properties have been prepared.…”

“…Azine compounds have interesting chemical and pharmacological properties. They are attracting increased interest for their potential in medical and biological applications (2)(3)(4), the design of metal complexes (5, 6) and other material applications (7,8). In 1959, a series of azine-type liquid crystals were synthesised by Wilfrid and Glenn (9) and were found have high clearing points.…”
