Preparation and properties of a novel poly(lactic-acid)-based thermoplastic vulcanizate from both experiments and simulations

Abstract: A novel bio-based thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) material consisting of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and a novel polymeric slide ring material (SeRM) was fabricated via isocyanate-induced dynamic vulcanization.

“…Therefore, there is still a need to develop new TPVs. [5][6][7] EPDM has excellent aging resistance (ozone resistance, heat resistance and weather resistance) and good compatibility with PP, 8,9 but also has poor adhesion and a relatively high price. 10,11 High vinyl polybutadiene rubber (HVPB) has good thermo-oxidative aging resistance, good damping performance at room temperature 12,13 as well as good compatibility with PP.…”

“…6,7 For instance, TPVs can be used to fabricate heart valve implants that mimic the heart's movement. 8 Additionally, TPVs are suitable for medical devices like catheters, tubing, and syringes, which require both exibility and durability. 9 This study developed a novel non-petroleum-based options to address the need for sustainable alternatives to petroleum-based TPVs.…”

“…Recently, thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) materials have attracted much attention because of environmental issues [1]. TPVs are a special class of thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) prepared by dynamic vulcanization (DV), a special reactive polymer-blending technology [2].…”

“…Not all rubbers and plastics can be made into TPV. The preparation of TPV needs to meet the following three conditions [3,4]: (1) The crystallinity of plastic should be >15%. (2) The critical entangled molecular weight of rubber should be as low as possible.…”
