Preparation and Properties of Castor Oil-Based Dual Cross-Linked Polymer Networks with Polyurethane and Polyoxazolidinone Structures

Abstract: Dual cross-linked polymer networks (DCPNs) are novel copolymers containing two different cross-linking polymers with superior comprehensive properties. The aim of this study was to explore the feasibility of preparation of novel castor oil-based DCPNs material. First, two novel biobased reactive monomers of epoxidized castor oil (ECO) and ricinoleic acid epoxy (RAE), containing both hydroxy and epoxy groups, were synthesized from castor oil (CO). Their chemical structures were characterized by Fourier transfor… Show more

“…The poor mechanical properties hindered their use in structural applications, which is probably responsible for abandonment of castor oil in the modern polyurethane industry. The requirement for sustainable development has triggered renewed interest in fabrication of polyurethanes from castor oil in recent years [20][21][22][23][24][25].…”

“…Plant-derived polyols are called natural oil polyols, which are mainly derived from CO for the manufacturing of PUs . The long and flexible segments of polyols are majorly involved in forming soft and elastic polymers, , whereas higher cross-linking yields rigid PUs. , By altering the extent of cross-linking and varying the length of the polymer, a wide range of PUs can be prepared that have distinct properties. Researchers have engineered different types of PUs by changing precursors, reaction conditions, and degrees of cross-linking. , Teramoto et al .…”

“…In addition, oxazolidine‐2‐one is a five‐membered heterocyclic structure with nitrogen and oxygen is more stable than carbamate, 37,38 ring structure acrylates have a lower shrinkage rate than chain acrylate 39 . The polymer with oxazolidine‐2‐one structures has a better comprehensive performance, such as a thermal stability and mechanical properties 40–43 . The UV‐curing system containing oxazolidine‐2‐one groups will have potential application prospects in fields such as 3D printing due to expected lower cured shrinkage and better heat resistance.…”
