Preparation and properties of green UV‐curable itaconic acid cross‐linked modified waterborne polyurethane coating

Abstract: Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) coating, as a kind of green product, can replace solvent polyurethane coating, but its application in the field of coating is limited since its defects such as slow curing efficiency, low strength, and water resistance. In this study, a trifunctional itaconic acid-based crosslinking agent (IHA) was synthesized from itaconic acid and hydroxyethyl acrylate. A series of green UV-curable WPU coatings were prepared by introducing IHA into WPU prepolymer in different proportions (2.5 $ … Show more

“…16 Therefore, it could be inferred that the nanoindentation hardness of WPU and WPU-g-PDMS 2 coatings matches the pencil hardness of 6H. However, the introduction of PDMS would decrease the nanoindentation hardness to a certain extent due to the lower cross-linking degree of the coating 51 and the higher phase separation degree of the WPU-g-PDMS 2 coating than the WPU coating. 52,53 The result indicates that the waterborne NP-GLIDE coating of WPU-g-PDMS has high hardness, which could resist external damage.…”

“…After drying for 12 h at 40 °C under vacuum, the WPR films and THF were added into the Soxhlet extractor and heated to reflux for 24 h . Afterward, the remaining WPR films were dried at 40 °C for 12 h. We compared the residual mass with the initial mass to obtain the gel content value by Equation ( 2) [32]:…”

“…The reason might be that the hard segment urethane bonds formed after cross-linking, which reduced the migration of the chain segments. The thermal stability of the material was enhanced after cross-linking [61].…”
