Preparation and properties of poly(imide siloxane) segmented copolymer/silica hybrid nanocomposites

Abstract: A series of Poly(imide siloxane) (PIS)/silica (SiO2) hybrid nanocomposites with C‐Si covalent bonding between the homogeneous PIS copolymer and SiO2 have been successfully synthesized. The PIS copolymer synthesized in this study is characterized by the coexistence of two segments: the polyimide segment and polydimethyldiphenylsiloxane segment, and the latter are specially featured with the introduction of a diphenyl group for improved homogeneity. The PIS/SiO2 hybrid nanocomposites were prepared from 3,3′,4,4′… Show more

“…In synthesizing the PIS/silica (SiO 2 ) hybrid nanocomposite, a C-Si covalent bond was formed between the homogeneous PIS copolymer and SiO 2 with the aid of a silicon coupling agent. 18 This C-Si covalent bond was found to successfully enhance the dispersion of the inorganic SiO 2 in the organic phase and reduce the particle size to o60 nm (SiO 2 content o10 wt%). Consequently, the material's mechanical and thermal properties were significantly improved.…”

“…Some researchers have studied the preparation and properties of the binary hybrid nanocomposites PI/SiO 2 4-10 and PI/TiO 2 . [11][12][13][14][15][16][17] In our previous papers, 18,19 we reported on the preparation of binary hybrid films of poly(imide siloxane) (PIS)/SiO 2 and PIS/TiO 2 . In synthesizing the PIS/silica (SiO 2 ) hybrid nanocomposite, a C-Si covalent bond was formed between the homogeneous PIS copolymer and SiO 2 with the aid of a silicon coupling agent.…”

“…Those hybrids combine the beneficial properties of inorganic materials with rigidity, high thermal stability, and mechanical strength as well as the organic polymers with flexibility, ductility, and easy processability 3–5. Through sol–gel process, there are many successfully prepared polyimide (PI)/inorganic materials hybrid thin films with a wide range of material properties, such as high thermal stability, high mechanical strength, flexibility, and easy processability 6–15. Certain properties, such as high glass transition temperature ( T g ), low CTE and low dielectric constant, and hydrophobicity, are desirable for materials in modern electrical usages.…”

“…However, other properties, such as T g and CTE, are generally superior in PI hybrids containing TiO 2 . Hence, a combination of the superiority of two types of metal oxides in PI films is sought to expand the respective characteristics of inorganics and obtain better properties of PI hybrids 14,15,18. While, the reactivity of alkane metal oxides is different and ranking in the following sequence: Zr(OR) 4 , Al(OR) 3 > Ti(OR) 4 > Sn(OR) 4 >> Si(OR) 4 .…”

“…In order to regain the compromised thermal and mechanical properties, due to the copolymerized polysiloxane, we incorporated the inorganic, nano-sized SiO 2 by sol-gel and in situ processes. 19 The obtained nanocomposite (PIS/SiO 2 ) possessed better thermal stabilities and mechanical strength than PIS copolymer. However, at high dosage of SiO 2 , there is still room for improvement in terms of the inorganic SiO 2 particle size.…”
