Preparation and Self‐Assembly of a 2:1 Polyoxometalate‐Fullerene C60 Shape Amphiphile

Abstract: An organic-inorganic hybrid (5) is synthesized where two Dawson polyoxometalate (POM) moieties are linked to one fullerene C 60 unit. In a POM-friendly solvent such as DMSO, DMF and CH 3 CN, 5 forms small vesicles below 100 nm at a concentration of 37.3 mg mL -1 . When the concentration decreases to 9.0 mg mL -1 , detection of aggregates becomes difficult. However, supramolecular structures with diverse morphologies can be induced upon the addition of H 2 O or toluene. In DMSO/H 2 O and DMF/H 2 O systems, plat… Show more

“…The shape amphiphiles are defined as a kind of macromolecules containing building blocks with distinct shapes. These building blocks are forced connected through chemical bonds, resulting in competition or cooperation of interactions and leading to versatile assembled structures. Among all the different shape amphiphile systems, special interests have been paid on molecular nanoparticles with well-defined shapes and precise chemical structures, with representative examples including buckminsterfullerene (C 60 , sphere), polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS, cube), perylene diimide (PDI, rod), porphyrin (Por, disk), , triphenylene (TP, disk), , and others. ,,, Understanding the role of distinct nanobuilding blocks in the self-assembly of shape amphiphiles with respect to their molecular functions, competition of interactions, as well as their overall sizes and shapes, will be essential for constructing supramolecular hierarchical structures at different length scales.…”

“…The compound has shown catalytic photooxygenation in water under heterogeneous conditions, but this property has not attracted much further attention. However, in 2016 and 2018, Li’s group reported two cases of fullerene–POM compounds and studied the photodynamic properties. , Although the macrostructural characteristics of these compounds have been studied in detail, little attention has been paid to the photoelectric properties. Because of the decrease of the solubility and the difficulty of crystallization, it is hard to obtain single-crystal structures of such hybrid molecules.…”
