Preparation, characterization, and biologic evaluation of copper(II) – Schiff base complexes derived from anthranilic acid and aldoses

Abstract: . IQBAL. Can. J. Chem. 71, 629 (1993). Cu(I1) -Schiff base complexes containing anthranilic acid and aldoses (sugars) as part of the base were prepared and characterized by microanalytical, thermogravimetric, magnetic, and spectroscopic data. The complexes are four-coordinate, anhydrous, and ML, type. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectral lines exhibited rhombic distortion from axial symmetry in the square-planar Cu(I1) complexes with gl i > gl > g,. The complexes were found to be active against kaolin … Show more

“…Formation of Schiff base ligands was indicated by yellowing of solution and development of an absorption band with a maximum at 400 nm 27 in the visible region. It is known that Schiff bases obtained from aliphatic carbonyl compounds are readily hydrolyzed 28 . However these Schiff bases are isolated as metal chelates.…”

“…On the other hand, the polymeric Co(II) and Cu(II) complexes were paramagnetic in nature. The Cu(II) complex showed a magnetic moment value of 1.91 BM, 43 a value close to the spin‐only value of 1.73 BM expected for an spin ( S ) = ½ system, whereas the magnetic moment value of the Co(II) complex was 2.6 BM; this generally arises from one unpaired electron and an apparently large orbital contribution and is also diagnostic of coordination geometry around a low‐spin, square‐planar Co(II) ion. 44…”

“…The Cu(II) complex shows a magnetic moment value of 1.88 B.M. [25], a value close to the spin-only value of 1.73 B.M., expected for S = system, while the magnetic moment value of the Co(II) complex is 2.76 B.M., which is generally arising from one unpaired electron and an apparently large orbital contribution and also diagnostic of the geometry around the low-spin tetracoordinated Co(II) atom [26]. The magnetic moment values of the Fe(III) and Mn(II) complexes support the formation of high-spin octahedral geometry [27].…”
