Abstract

Itaconic acid-4-14C has been prepared by condensation o f sodium cyanide I4C with ethyl a-bromomethyt acrylate and hydrozysis of the intermediate ethyl a-(cyanomethyl) acrylate. Itaconic anhgdri~ie-4-~~C has been used i n Friedel-Crafts reactions with respectively biphenyl, 2-chtorobiphenyl, 4-chlorobiphenyZ for the preparat i o n o f 4-bipheny1-4-0~0-2-methyZene butyric acid -4-14C and the corresponding -2'chloro and 4'-chloro substituted derivatives. 0 2976 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
