Preparation of a New Polystyrene Supported-Ethylenediaminediacetic Acid Resin and its Sorption Behavior toward Divalent Metal Ions

Abstract: A new polystyrene-supported ethylenediaminediacetic acid resin has been synthesized through a reaction between the amination of the commercially available 4-chloromethyl polystyrene polymer with ethylenediamine and the subsequent carboxymethylation with monobromoacetic acid, using ethylenediamine as spacer. The chelation behavior of this resin toward the divalent metal ions Cu 2+ , Ni 2+ , Zn 2+ , and Pb 2+ in aqueous solutions was investigated. Batch equilibration experiments were carried out as a function of… Show more

“…This is the peak change of -OH band showing the coordination participation with metal ions. These broad peaks include not only the fraction of the moieties of the ligands but also complex formation [22]. The C=C stretching vibration on the aromatic ring was observed between 1600 and 1603 cm −1 and the sharp peaks at 1365 cm −1 and 1100-1250 cm −1 were referred to the -C-N stretching vibration [23].…”

“…ose of metal complexes of Co(II), Ni(II), and Zn(II) shifted to a higher frequency. e peak intensity depending on the formation of the complexes increased as a result of interaction between metal ions and -OH [23,24]. While the CO peak in the ligand was seen at 1731 cm −1 , these bonds in the Co(II), Ni(II), and Zn(II) metal complexes were observed at 1723, 1727, and 1723 cm −1 , respectively.…”

“…Sulfur can be present in the form of thiocarbamate, thioester, thiol and disulphide function . In this context, synthesis of polymers containing functional groups, particularly amino (‐NH), carboxylic (‐COOH), or mercaptopropyl (‐SH) functions, has received great attention, and several research groups have studied the adsorption of heavy metal ions using polymers containing carboxylic groups (‐COOH) and ‐NH…”
