Preparation of a Thermally Insulating Nanocomposite by Blending Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene with Gas-Phase Silica

Abstract: In this study, ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)/gas-phase silica (GS) nanocomposites were prepared by the melt extrusion method. Scanning electron microscopy images of the cross-sectional morphology of the nanocomposites showed that the GS was dispersed uniformly in the UHMWPE matrix. Thermogravimetric analysis confirmed that the addition of GS resulted in an increase in the decomposition temperature of the UHMWPE matrix. X-ray diffraction showed that the GS had an obstructive effect on the cr… Show more

“…The collected powders were then dried in vacuum at 100 °C for 24 h to obtain a dry mixture. Then, the mixture was hot‐pressed at 220 °C for 0.5 h at 10 MPa and then cooled in air to room temperature to make a 1‐mm thick sheet for tensile and wear measurement . The sheet was called X‐UHMWPE/UHMWPE composite and a sketch is shown in Figure to describe the preparation procedure .…”

“…The morphology of the cross‐section of the composite was observed using a JEOL JSM‐6500F scanning electron microscope (SEM) with an acceleration voltage of 10 kV. Prior to the SEM observation, the cross‐section was obtained by quenching breakage in liquid nitrogen and a thin Au layer was coated to increase electrical conductivity . Mechanical properties such as tensile strength and elongation at break were obtained by using an Electromechanical Universal Testing Machine (ETM 5308) according to GB/T 1040.2‐2006/ISO 527‐2:1993 at room temperature and the tensile speed was set as 250 mm/min .…”

“…Organic–inorganic hybrids materials attracted a widespread attention due to the prominent improvement in the mechanical, thermal, electrical properties compared to the neat organic materials . As a common inorganic filler, nano‐silica (SiO 2 ) possesses small size effect, surface and boundary effect, quantum size effect, and so on, which give it high strength, toughness, and thermal stability . Nano‐silica is expected to hybrid with CNC to develop a novel CNC‐SiO 2 nanohybrids with better properties, especially thermal stability .…”
