Preparation of activated petroleum coke for supercapacitor application

Abstract: The present work is to use petroleum coke as a carbon material for energy storage application. Activated petroleum coke (APC) is prepared using potassium hydroxide as an activation agent. Then the APC is doped with nitrogen and manganese-nitrogen components to enhance the capacitance of the material. The X-ray diffraction result shows the turbo static behavior, which is fully disordered structure. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy shows the functional groups present in the prepared sample. Using the … Show more

“…Based on the sulfur content, petroleum coke is categorized into high-sulfur coke (S > 3.0 wt.%), medium-sulfur coke (0.5 < S < 3.0 wt.%), and low-sulfur coke (S < 0.5 wt.%) [ 3 ]. Low-sulfur coke is used for the preparation of graphite electrodes [ 4 ], carburizing agents, reserve carbon [ 5 ], and some special materials [ 6 , 7 , 8 ]. Medium-sulfur coke is applied to the production of prebaking anode aluminum electrolysis, while high-sulfur coke is limited to fuel combustion in chemical plants [ 9 , 10 , 11 ], cement [ 12 ], and composite materials [ 13 ].…”
