Preparation of Calcipotriol Emulsion Using Bacterial Exopolysaccharides as Emulsifier for Percutaneous Treatment of Psoriasis Vulgaris

Abstract: An exopolysaccharides/calcipotriol (EPS/CPT) emulsion was prepared using bacterial EPS as emulsifier, sunflower oil as an oil phase and CPT as the loaded drug, and the effect of this emulsion on psoriasis vulgaris treatment was evaluated. An EPS composed of mannose (70.56%) and glucose (29.44%) was obtained from the marine mangrove bacteria Bacillus amyloliquefaciens ZWJ (Zhu Wenjing) strain. The EPS has significant emulsifying activity at the concentration of 1.5%. The prepared EPS/CPT emulsion has small and … Show more

“…For coconut oil, emulsifying activity was similar at different pH levels for E24, but for E48, pH 5.1 was most effective, followed by pH 3.1; for E168, only pH 3.1 still presented some emulsification. Similar results were obtained with the EPS of the B. amyloliquefacens ZWJ strain [ 77 ], where the optimal concentration was 1.5 mg/L for two natural oils (olive oil (96.2%), sunflower oil (76%)). In the case of B. amyloliquefaciens LPL061 [ 21 ], the emulsifying activity was lower than that presented by EPS RT7 .…”

“…39 EPS is a natural nontoxic and non-irritating polysaccharide with good biocompatibility, which will facilitate meeting the requirements for product safety, patient compliance, and long-term treatment. 42 In addition, NYS can enhance the immune response to CA and protect the ultrastructure of the vaginal epithelium. 43 Above all, ENNE has certain advantages and strong application potential for the treatment of local fungal infections due to its nanoscale particle size, excellent mobility, pH stability, slow release, and biological adhesion.…”

“…They reported the ability of the reduced graphene oxide nanocarrier to the betterment of cyclosporine permeation, and retention in dermal layers could be used for better psoriasis management, with minimal adverse effects observed through oral/systemic routes [ 186 ]. Song et al loaded calcipotriol in exo-polysaccharides/calcipotriol (EPS/CPT) emulsion, sunflower oil, and calcipotriol as the loaded drug, and the therapeutic effect was evaluated [ 187 ]. The in vitro and in vivo studies expressed better efficacy for the management of psoriasis vulgaris by increasing the aggregation of CPT in psoriatic lesions and attenuating pro-inflammatory cytokine levels [ 187 ].…”
