Preparation of epoxidized Eucommia ulmoides gum and its application in styrene‐butadiene rubber (SBR)/silica composites

Abstract: In this article, we primarily introduced a method to prepare epoxidized Eucommia ulmoides gum (EEUG) and studied its application as interfacial additive in styrene‐butadiene rubber (SBR)/silica composites. We prepared the EEUG from the Eucommia gum extract solution using E. ulmoides leaves pretreated with enzymatic solutions as the raw material, petroleum ether as the solvent, and peracetic acid (CH3COOOH) as the oxidant under a certain temperature. Accordingly, we focused on studying the effects of a series o… Show more

“…The decline in storage modulus (E') of neat PLA at around 65 • C was induced by its glass transition, however, two occurred in the TPVs. One at a lower temperature (~−50 • C) was attributed to the glass transition of EUG-g-GMA [37], while the other (~65 • C) had a close relationship with a glass transition of PLA [32,38] and melting of EUG-g-GMA crystals [14]. The crosslinked EUG-g-GMA phase was in the consecutive state throughout the TPVs, and it acted as hard "backbones" in the frozen TPVs at −90 • C, which generated a higher E' than pure PLA, benefiting shape recovery.…”

“… To satisfy the increasingly demand in practical application, reinforcements of rubbers by incorporation of nanofillers have been intensively investigated. As previous reported, nanoparticles such as carbon black (CB) , silica , carbon nanotubes (CNTs) , cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) , graphene are usually considered as ideal reinforcing fillers for SBR matrix, in virtue of their small dimension and high specific surface area . As a derivative of graphene, graphene oxide (GO) has recently attracted a substantial attention in the rubber reinforcement, owing to its excellent mechanical, thermal, barrier properties as well as easy processing .…”

“…The absorption peak at 1666 cm −1 was extension vibration peak of the double bond (C═C), while the peak at 1383 cm −1 was attributed to extension vibration of the methyl group connected with the double bond. EEUG exhibited similar spectrum to EUG; however, new absorption peaks occurred at 1250 and 878 cm −1 in EEUG spectrum, which represented the symmetrical and asymmetrical stretching vibration of the epoxy group . The characteristic absorption of epoxy group in EEUG spectrum demonstrated the occurrence of an oxidation reaction in EUG.…”
