“…A variety of devices have been described to help conform tissue specimens to a shape that will allow sectioning for Mohs surgery: heat extractor, glass slide, piece of x-ray film, Miami Special, Cryomold, Cryocup, and CryoHist. 6 The initial cost, cost of consumables, ease of use, speed and efficiency, space requirements, durability, and need for an additional source of cryogen should be considered when comparing these devices.…”

“…A full review of benefits and drawbacks of the different techniques is included in Table 1. [1][2][3][4] We hypothesized that high histopathologic specimen quality could be maintained with non-beveled Mohs layers. This study is limited in its retrospective design, restricted to a single institution, and the fact the slides were scored by the operating surgeon only.…”

“…The purpose of this article is to compare the innovative dry ice technique 12 with two standard methods currently used for tissue processing in Mohs surgery, the Heat Sink method 5,13 and the Miami Special 7 , using an animal model.…”

“…One of the most popular techniques used to flatten and freeze specimens is the heat extractor method, used for flattening and freezing the tissues inside the cryostat 12,13 . However, the warm weather and high temperatures, increase the thermal exchange between the cryostat chamber and the environment, and it can slow down the process, especially when many samples need to be processed 7,12 .…”
