Preparation of Functionalized Magnetic Polystyrene Microspheres and Their Application in Food Safety Detection

Abstract: Based on the specific binding of sulfonic acid groups to melamine, β-agonists and other compounds, Fe3O4 nano-magnetic beads were coated with polystyrene using an improved micro-suspension emulsion polymerization method, thus forming core–shell magnetic polystyrene microspheres (Fe3O4@PS) with Fe3O4 as the core and polystyrene as the shell. These functionalized microspheres, which can be used as magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) adsorbent, were prepared after further sulfonation. These microspheres were c… Show more

“…A large surface area and good dispersion may result in higher speci city and shorter reaction times. The preparation techniques for magnetic microbeads is now mature [13,14] and includes methods such as microemulsion polymerization [15] , suspension polymerization [16,17] ,dispersion polymerization [18,19,27] , emulsion polymerization [20] , and inverse emulsion polymerization [21][22][23] .…”

“…However, there are also some other problems in nano-Fe 3 O 4 particles, such as easy corrosion and agglomeration [7] , [8] , [9] . Functionalized nanocomposites based on Fe 3 O 4 particles can address the problems of aggregation and corrosion susceptibility, as well as enhance their adsorption capacity [10] . Graphene oxide group was introduced into the surface of the particles to prepare Fe 3 O 4 @GO (graphene oxide) as an adsorbent.…”

“…Monodisperse polystyrene (PS) microspheres, which have stable properties and are not difficult to prepare, have the potential to be bioaerosol mimics. Monodispersity usually refers to the uniform particle size or diameter distribution of the microspheres, and monodisperse PS microspheres have a wide range of applications in several technological fields due to their homogeneous physicochemical properties [16][17][18][19][20][21][22]. PS, as a polymeric material with high light transmittance, is one of the main synthesized materials for fluorescent microspheres, which have been widely used as a reference reagent for proteins, gene vectors, and absolute cell counting [23,24].…”
