Preparation of high encapsulation efficiency fragrance microcapsules and their application in textiles

Abstract: Poly(1,4-butanediol dimethacrylate) (PBDDMA) microcapsules with PBDDMA as the shell and dementholized peppermint oil (DPO) fragrance as the core material have been synthesized through a novel interfacial free-radical polymerization.

“…Fragrances show up several features that provide consumers with pleasant effects such as relieving anxiety, alleviating suffering, hypnose, uplifting spirit and enhancing efficiency at work [1]. To such ends, they are added to various products widely used in daily life like laundry detergents, soaps, personal care products (body washes, shampoos, deodorants, …) and fabric softeners [2,3].…”

“…The manufacture process consists in either impregnation with a perfume solution or coating using a mixture of binder and fragrance. A drawback is a poor resistance to wash; only two wash cycles can be resisted at maximum [1]. Perfume products are highly volatile, and their odor is rapidly lost after application [3,8].…”

“…Encapsulation efficiency is one of the most important properties of microcapsules, which is decided by many parameters such as mass ratio of core materials to shell materials, volume ratio of oil phase to aqueous phase, time and temperature for polymerization, and dosages of surfactants, when the microencapsulation is accomplished by interfacial polymerization . In this article, we fixed the other parameters and studied the encapsulation efficiency of monosultap microcapsules under different mass ratio of monosultap to the shell, which means the ratio between the mass of monosultap and the mass of IPDI & pentaerythrotol, and the results are demonstrated in Figure .…”
