Preparation of Highly Active Silica-Supported Au Catalysts for CO Oxidation by a Solution-Based Technique

Abstract: Although Au catalysts can be readily prepared on titania via the deposition-precipitation (DP) method, the direct application of the method similar to the preparation of silica-supported Au catalysts only results in diminished success. This paper reports a novel, efficient method to synthesize highly active Au catalysts supported on mesoporous silica (SBA-15) through a gold cationic complex precursor [Au(en)2]3+ (en = ethylenediamine) via a wet chemical process. The gold cationic precursor was immobilized on n… Show more

“…Based on this principle, the synthesis of Au/MSM catalysts becomes easier by deposition-precipitation of this gold complex, given that in alkaline media the negative-charged surface of the MSM can readily adsorb the [Au(en) 2 ] 3+ cations, by deprotonation reaction of ethylenediamine ligands [128]. Dai and coworkers [44,129] synthesized gold catalysts supported on mesoporous SBA-15 by mixing the support with an aqueous solution of [Au(en) 2 ]Cl 3 in alkaline media (pH range between 6.0 and 10.0). After agitation of the slurry for 2 h, the yellowish solid was filtrated, vacuum dried and reduced under H 2 /Ar (4%) at 150 °C for 1 h. This procedure led to obtain small (~4.9 nm) and uniform AuNPs confined within the SBA-15 mesopores.…”

“…Our group prepared Au/mesoporous SiO 2 (Au/SBA-15 and Au/MCM-41) catalysts using Au(en) 2 Cl 3 (en = ethylenediamine) as the precursor (Fig. 1) [75,83]. The same precursor has also been used by others to prepare Au/NaHY [126], Au/TiO 2 [35], Au/C [127], and Au/clay mineral [128] catalysts.…”

“…This carboxylate binds with a superoxide and forms CO 2 [61]. As more evidence keeps accumulating on the high CO oxidation activity of gold nanoparticles on any oxide support, including a recent study on SiO 2 [62] and even on non-oxide supports [16], the mechanistic options appear to zero in to highly defective gold clusters independent of the support. [22,23].…”
