Although many preparation approaches have been developed, it remains a huge challenge to achieve ultraviolet (UV)‐protection films that combine high transparency, excellent UV‐shielding, and mechanical properties. Herein, we demonstrate a facile and eco‐friendly process for fabricating strong, flexible, and transparent UV‐protective poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) films by exploiting silicomolybdic acid (SiMoA) as UV absorber and reinforcing phase. Fourier‐transform infrared analysis confirms the formation of strong hydrogen‐bonding interactions between PVA and SiMoA. The glass‐transition temperature, mechanical properties, and UV‐shielding stability of the UV‐protective PVA composite films obviously increase with increasing the content of SiMoA. By incorporation of only 2 wt % SiMoA, the UV‐protective PVA composite film can block more than 90% of UV light in the entire UV regions and retain high visible light transparency (up to 95%). Simultaneously, the UV‐protective PVA composite film presents excellent mechanical properties with a tensile strength of 65.2 MPa and an elongation at break of 172.6%, which are 72.0 and 69.5% higher than that of pristine PVA films. This work provides a simple but effective approach for creating strong, flexible, and transparent UV‐blocking polymeric materials via hydrogen‐bonding assembly, which are expected to have wide application prospects in UV‐protection field. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The magnetic targeting drug delivery system is an effective way of targeting therapy. In this study, the monodisperse Fe3O4 nanoparticles with a particles size of about 180 nm were first prepared via a solvothermal method. Subsequently, the core-shell structure Fe3O4/SiO2 and Fe3O4/SiO2/polypyrrole (PPy) composite nanospheres were successfully synthesized by coating Fe3O4 nanoparticles with SiO2 shell layer using the Stöber method and PPy shell by solvothermal method in turn. The as-prepared nanoparticles were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Ultraviolet-Visible spectrophotometer (UV-Vis). The results indicated that the as-prepared composite nanospheres displayed a well-defined core-shell structure and monodispersity. The thicknesses of SiO2 shell and PPy shell were ~6 nm and ~19 nm, respectively. Additionally, the as-prepared nanoparticles exhibited high saturation magnetization of 104 emu/g, 77 emu/g, and 24 emu/g, and have great potential applications in drug delivery. The drug loading and drug release of the Fe3O4/SiO2 and Fe3O4/SiO2/PPy composite nanospheres to ibuprofen (IBU) under stirring and ultrasonication were investigated. Their drug loading efficiency and drug release efficiency under ultrasonication were all higher than 33% and 90%, respectively. The drug release analyses showed sustained release of IBU from nanospheres and followed the Korsmeyer-Peppas model.

This work reported a facile synthetic approach to synthesise core-shell Fe 3 O 4 /SiO 2 /polypyrrole composite nanoparticles with the superparamagnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles as the inner core. The core-shell Fe 3 O 4 /SiO 2 /polypyrrole composite nanoparticles were prepared through a three-step approach involving co-precipitation for the synthesis of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, Stöber method for SiO 2 intermediate layer coating and solvothermal methods for polypyrrole shell. The as-prepared nanoparticles were characterised using transmission electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analyses and vibration sample magnetometer. The particle size of the inner core Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles was found to be 15 ± 3 nm, and the thicknesses of the SiO 2 shell and polypyrrole shell were ∼2.5 and ∼5 nm, respectively. From Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles to Fe 3 O 4 /SiO 2 and then to Fe 3 O 4 /SiO 2 /polypyrrole composite nanoparticles, the magnetic saturation gradually decreases from 67 to 34 emu/g, then dropped to 7 emu/g. The as-prepared Fe 3 O 4 /SiO 2 /polypyrrole composite nanoparticles showed potential applications in drug and gene delivery systems.
