Preparation of Microcapsules Containing Erythritol with Interfacial Polycondensation Reaction by Using the (W/O) Emulsion

Abstract: It was tried to microencapsulate erythritol as a phase change material with the interfacial polycondensation reaction method by using the (W/O) emulsion and to characterize the microcapsules prepared. In the experiment, toluene diisocyanate, diphenyl methane diisocyanate and hexamethylenediisocyanate were used to form the polyurethane shell and the effects of them on the heat storage density and the microencapsulation efficiency were investigated. Furthermore, the effect of supercooling prevention agent on the… Show more

“…7 The thermal energy is stored by the solidliquid PCMs, while the supporting materials maintain the solid shape of the form-stable PCMs. The supporting materials for form-stable PCMs can be ether inorganics such as diatomite, 6 SiO 2,8 TiO 2 9 and fly ash, 10 etc., or polymers such as polymethyl methacrylate, 11 polyurethane, 12 resin, 13 and polyaniline (PANI), 14,15 etc. Graphite-based materials are another kind of important supporting materials.…”

“…As a result, polymer-supported sugar alcohols form-stable PCMs are rarely reported. 12,22,23 On the other hand, sugar alcohols in general exhibit very high and unstable supercooling, which is unfavorable for their applications. The reason why supercooling is occurred is still not fully understood.…”

“…Different types of microcapsules have been focused such as: encapsulation of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) [4], a first generation selfhealing system containing a liquid healing agent and Grubb's catalyst particles based on ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), microcapsules containing erythritol with interfacial polycondensation reaction by using the (W/O) emulsion [5], microcapsule for a self-repairing anticorrosion coating based on a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) [6] healing chemistry, microcapsule containing catalyst for self-healing polymeric material such stannous octoate or dibutyltindilaurate (DBTL) [7], etc.…”

“…As the preparation methods of microcapsules containing aqueous solution, the following preparation methods have been reported, the suspension polymerization method [5] [6], the interfacial polycondensation method [7] [8], the gelling in liquid method [9], the melting dispersion cooling method [10] [11], and the inverse interfacial polymerization method [12]. These preparation methods cleverly used the multiple emulsion such as (W/O)/W emulsion [13]…”
