Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) colloidal particles are nowadays extensively used in several applications and more specifically in nanotechnology. Challenges are focused on the green synthesis process leading to size‐controlled particles. In the present work, PMMA particles were successfully synthesized using tandem acoustic emulsification in water without organic solvent, and cross‐linkers. 2,2′‐azobis(2‐methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride (AIBA) or ammonium persulfate (APS), were used as initiators. Parameters leading to size control were clearly identified. Consequently, the cooling rate of the solution after polymerization time appears dominating. Particle size distribution was monodispersed for both initiators. A nonionic surfactant, Tween 20, was also added, leading to a decrease in size particle and an increase in synthesis yield. Depending on the chemical groups provided by the initiator, PMMA particles appear negatively or positively charged. These charges located on the particle surface led to stable particle dispersion by limiting aggregation phenomena. Tunable surface charge was confirmed across the elaboration of coatings only made of PMMA particles, using conventional techniques wherein charged species are needed (Layer‐by‐Layer assembly and electrophoretic deposition). PMMA particles were also labelled using fluorescent dyes. Fluorescein and Nile Blue A were loaded during the polymerization process to ensure a homogeneous distribution of the dyes within the particles.

Luminescent core-shell polymer particles carrying amino groups for covalent immobilization of enzymes were synthesized for practical applications in immunoassays. The polystyrene core particles were synthesized by miniemulsion polymerization of oil-in-water emulsion styrene droplets dissolving 2-(2-chloropropionyl)ethyl methacrylate and the europium complex emulsified with 2-methacryloyloxyethyl-N,N-dimethyl-N-n-dodecylammonium bromide. The red luminescence attributed to europium complexes embedded in the core particles was observed upon UV irradiation. The PSt-g-POEGMAx-NH 2 aminated core-shell particles were prepared by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization of oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (OEGMAx), followed by Gabriel synthesis. The densities of grafted chains were determined by the composition, the hydrodynamic diameters, and the fluorescence labeling method. POEGMAx-grafted chains were found to affect the dispersion stability of the particles. The nonspecific adsorption of bovine serum albumin was suppressed by the POEGMAx-grafted chains. The enzymatic activity of horseradish peroxidase covalently bound to the terminal amino groups of POEGMAx-grafted chains was evaluated by colorimetric immunosorbent assay. In this work, a new class of totally organic fluorescent nanogel particles and their exceptionally specific behaviors based on their unique structures are introduced, which draws a sharp line from conventional fluorophore‐doped and fluorophore‐branched‐type particles. The nanogel particles, the diameter of which could be controlled by adjusting reaction conditions, such as the solvent system, were spontaneously fabricated with a spherical shape by direct polymerization of non‐heterocyclic aromatic compounds, such as 2,6‐dihydroxyanthracene, 2,6‐dihydroxynaphthalene, and 9,9‐bis(4‐hydroxyphenyl)fluorene with triazinane as the cross‐linker. A fluorophoric moiety formed from a polymer main chain was realized in the particle, and consequently, the resultant content of the fluorophoric moiety was around 70–80 wt % per particle. The uniqueness and versatility of the particles can be emphasized by their good compatibility with various solvents due to their amphiphilic and ampholytic swelling properties, but also by their remarkable fluorescent solvatochromism in the dispersion state. Furthermore, these behaviors were preserved even in their polymer composite system. This study also demonstrates that various fluorescent polymer films can be fabricated with emission color control due to memorization of the solvatochromism phenomenon of the dispersed fluorescent nanoparticles.
