Preparation of polymers containing fragments of N.N′‐tetramethylthiuram disulfide

Abstract

The preparation of polymethylmethacrylates at 80 and 95°C and of polystyrenes a t 95 'C using various concentrations of N.N'-tetramethylthiuram disulfide (I) is described. The sulphur contents, the molecular weights and the UV spectra of the prepared polymers indicate the presence of fragments of I in the polymer chains and the decrease of the molecular weight with increasing concentrations of I. A sample of polystyrene was also examined by mass spectroscopy. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Es wird die Darstellung von Polymethylmethacrylaten bei 80 und 95 O C und von Polystyrolen bei 95 O C unter Anwendung verschiedener Konzentrationen von N.N'-Tetramethylthiuramdisulfid (I) beschrieben. Die Schwefelgehalte, die Molekulargewichte und die UV-Spektren der dargestellten Polymeren weisen auf die Anwesenheit von Bruchstiikken von I in den Polymerketten hin und auf die Abnahme des Molekulargewichts mit steigenden Konzentrationen von I. Eine Polystyrol-Probe wurde auch massenspektroskopisch untersucht.
