Supportedm etal catalysts have been tested for an unprecedented reductive dimerizationo fc arboxylic acids to estersu nder 8bar hydrogen in solvent-free conditions.A mong various metal-loaded tin oxide catalysts,p latinum-loaded tin dioxide (Pt/ SnO 2 )s hows the highest ester yield for the reaction of dodecanoic acid. Among Pt catalysts on various supports, Lewis acidic oxides,e specially SnO 2 ,s how high activity.T he most active catalyst, 5wt% Pt/ SnO 2 reduceda t1 00 8 8C, is effectivef or the reductive esterification of various carboxylic acids,a nd the catalyst is reusablef or nine cycles, demonstrating the first successful example for the title reaction. Infrared (IR) studies of am odel compound (formic acid) on some metal oxides indicate as trong Lewis acidbase interaction between SnO 2 and the carbonyl oxygen. ForP t/SnO 2 catalysts with different Pt particle sizes, the activity increases with decreasing size of Pt metal. Ac ooperative catalysis of the Pt metal nanoparticles and the Sn 4+ + Lewis acid sitesi sp roposed.
