Preparation, Release, Rheology and Stability of Piroxicam Emulgel

Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this work was to develop and optimize the emulgel formulation of piroxicam with two types of gelling agent chitosan and xanthan gum. The release profiles of prepared formulas were investigated. In addition, the rheology and stability of the best formula were investigated. Methods:Emulsified piroxicam was prepared to use oleic acid, tween 80 and PG with a ratio (3:10:10). In xanthan based emulgel, the xanthan gum (1% and 1.5%) was spread as powder on emulsified piroxicam with stirring … Show more

“…While these formulations often contain oil excipients hindering drug release, gel-based emulgels allow for the inclusion of water and the aqueous phase, resulting in less viscous and greasy preparations. Consequently, emulsion-based gels prove highly suitable for the release and delivery of hydrophobic active substances, encompassing drugs, cosmetics, and food ingredients 91 . • Emulgels provide controlled release and targeted drug delivery through dual controlled release mechanisms involving both emulsion and gel systems.…”

“…In addition to the numerous benefits of emulgels, they also have some disadvantages. One of the disadvantages is the entrapment of bubbles during the preparation process [ 120 ] but this can be overcome by sonicating the formed gel for 15 min [ 58 ]. Further, emulgel can lead to skin irritation in people with contact dermatitis and can cause allergic reactions [ 120 ].…”
