Propagation by root cuttings is an easy and low-cost method for plant taxa with an ability to produce rhizomes or suckers. This research examined the possibility of using root/rhizome cuttings in the propagation of two difficult-to-root old rose cultivars, ‘Harison’s Yellow’ and ‘Poppius’. A plant-based preparation (Root Juice), titanium (Tytanit), and IBA (Chryzotop Green 0.25% IBA, Rhizopon AA 020 XX 2.00% IBA) were tested as rooting and growth enhancers for thick, medium, and thin rhizome/root cuttings. Additionally, observations were made to identify the site of the initial root and shoot formation. Shoots appeared before roots, without polarity. The visible swellings differentiating in new root/shoot buds in these two rose cultivars were placed along the rhizome. The primordia of root and shoot buds were situated near the pith rays and the vascular cambial zone. The trial reported here showed significant effects of the thickness of root cuttings and the preparations used in terms of rooting success and growth characteristics. Medium-sized cuttings of rose ‘Harison’s Yellow’ (45.0%), and thin cuttings of ‘Poppius’ (74.3%) achieved the highest rooting percentages. The most effective treatment was with Chryzotop Green, but Root Juice 0.01% and Tytanit 0.04% (‘Poppius’) and 0.02% (both cultivars) also had positive activity. Root Juice and Tytanit can be suggested for rooting cuttings of these roses as eco-friendly preparations.

The research was aimed at studying the possibility of an alternative method of propagation the difficult-to-root Rosa gallica ‘Tuscany Superb’. The root cuttings of three thickness were rooted using IBA preparations (Chryzotop green, Rhizopon AA 020XX) and biostimulants (Tytanit, Root JuiceTM). The shoots disappeared before the growth of the roots. At the first days of growth, the both shoots and roots elongated upright without polarity. The primordia of the first type of root/shoot buds were situated in cambium zone as the subtending traces of near the rays visible on the cross sections. Moreover, the second types of buds were located in pericycle tissues. The swellings suggested inherence buds were disappearing before rooting. The content of reducing and non-reducing carbohydrates was lower at the time of harvesting the rooted cuttings than before rooting. The thickness of the root cuttings had a significant importance for growth parameters and content of carbohydrates in rooted cuttings. The most useful root cuttings, those achieving the highest mean rooting percentage are thick (76.8%) and medium (67.9%) size. Preparations or biostimulants had a differential influence on rooting process and none of them unequivocally guaranteed an improvement in the rooting percentage of cuttings, parameters of growth or content of carbohydrates. The Rhizopon AA 020XX (90.0%) in thick and Chryzotop green (87.5%) in medium cuttings increased the rooting percentage significantly. Root JuiceTM (0.1%, 0.2%) and Tytanit (0.04%) were also enough positive activity in medium cuttings and can replace IBA preparations. ********* In press - Online First. Pelargonium nurseries in Europe encounter rooting problems due to the low quality of the cuttings supplied during the winter. The problem may be due to the poor quality of the stock plants from which the cuttings are harvested. The main problem that growers have is the prolonged shipping period and its effect on the viability and rootability of the cuttings once they arrive in Europe. We tested the effect of water stressing the stock plants grown grown in random block design in a commercial nursery and checked the rootability of cuttings after storage and the susceptibility of cuttings to rot. We assumed that mild water stress could harden the stock plant and thus the cuttings, and they would survive the journey better. Mild water stress improved the rooting ability of some Pelargonium varieties after days of storage compared to unstressed plants. Cuttings from water-stressed stock plants showed less decay after prolonged storage than unstressed stock plants as measured by percent rotten cutting. Chlorophyll content increased significantly in cuttings from stressed stock plants. The yield and physical parameters of the cuttings from stressed and nonstressed stock plants did not change. Results indicate that applying water stress to stock plants improves the quality of Pelargonium cuttings.
