Preschool children's taxonomic knowledge of animal species

Abstract: Although taxonomic proficiency is a prerequisite for understanding ideas central to biology, previous research has established that learners frequently misclassify animals by not following the tenets of accepted taxonomic rubrics. This has immediate relevance with the recently revised English National Curriculum now requiring concepts of animal classification to be taught to 5–6 year‐olds. The current study represents an attempt to explore how preschool children aged 3–5 years classify animals, and patterns in… Show more

“…Despite the reduced meaning ascribed to taxonomy, a number of researchers have studied how students think about traditional taxonomic groups, reasoning that the similarities and differences used in traditional taxonomy are necessary for understanding the patterns of evolution (Allen, ; Burgoon, ; Cinici, , ; Trowbridge & Mintzes, ; Yen, Yao, & Chiu, ; Yen, Yao, & Mintzes, ). However, by absenting evolution from their studies, these researchers are asking students to classify blind and are essentially performing a study of folk biology.…”

“…Learning About Science in Preschool: Play-Based Activities… Research efforts aimed to support science-specific understanding by young children have been evident in fields of biology and physics (Russo 2008;Allen 2015;Fragkiadaki and Ravanis 2015;Sackes 2015), and there has been less focus on chemistry. Meaningful understanding by young children about the concepts of chemistry is dependent on how well teachers can develop appropriate activities and understand how children interpret these experiences (Adbo and Vidal Carulla 2019).…”

“…Cockroaches were, interestingly, frequently misidentified as disease carriers with the European cockchafer (Table 1) suggesting that at least some invertebrates are perceived very superficially. Indeed, learners tend to categorize something as being an insect if it is small with jointed legs and has a "bug shaped" oval body (Allen, 2015;Braund, 1991;Shepardson, 2002). Suitable educational strategies and interventions, perhaps using arthropod -plant interactions, should therefore be applied in early childhood in order to increase ecological awareness about invertebrates which are inevitable parts of ecosystems (Prokop & Tunnicliffe, 2010).…”
