Prescriptive analytics for reducing 30-day hospital readmissions after general surgery

Abstract: Introduction New financial incentives, such as reduced Medicare reimbursements, have led hospitals to closely monitor their readmission rates and initiate efforts aimed at reducing them. In this context, many surgical departments participate in the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP), which collects detailed demographic, laboratory, clinical, procedure and perioperative occurrence data. The availability of such data enables the development of data science methods … Show more

“…Decision trees (DTs) find a wide range of practical uses [190,189,108,179,26,29,28,69,25,27,30,32,33,115,72,34,37,31,142,145,52,24,174,171,36,67,127,35,19]. Moreover, DTs are the most visible example of a collection of machine learning (ML) models that have recently been advocated as essential for high-risk applications [160].…”

“…Moreover, an assessment of their personal risk of acquiring COVID-19 infection should be explained to them. Subsequently, the risk of acquiring a rare complication to COVID-19 vaccination, to their risk of becoming seriously infected by COVID-19 [34] must be carefully established using the value system of the patient.…”

“…A prescriptive model was developed in the healthcare industry to reduce the risk of 30day readmission, leading to an annual saving of at least $20 million in the United States by analyzing medical reports of 722,101 patients of general surgery (Bertsimas et al, 2020). Prescriptive analytics was also used to optimize healthcare inventory management by improving the quality of replenishment decisions and reducing the probability of emergency orders based on patients' number, type and length of stay in the ward (Galli et al, 2020).…”
