This study was performed to measure and compare the levels of steroid hormones [estrone (E), 17β-estradiol (E), and estriol (E)] and their conjugated metabolites in cow's and river buffalo's meat in two distinct follicular and luteal phases. Moreover, the possible effect of a heating process on steroid hormone concentration was also investigated. The collected meat (biceps femoris muscle) samples were subjected to liquid extraction, enzymatical deconjugation, and C18 solid-phase extraction. Estrogens were analyzed using high performance liquid chromatography equipped with a fluorescence detector. In the follicular phase the levels of steroid hormones (E and E) in either tested species were higher than the luteal phase. Moreover, in the present study, E concentration (free and deconjugated value, 16.2 ± 1.1 ng/L) was found to be the highest phenolic estrogen in beef, while the dominant estrogen in muscle of river buffalo was E (free and deconjucated value, 23.3 ± 1.3 ng/L). The study revealed that animal species influenced the concentration of hormones (E and E) in the samples. The heating process did not significantly change (p > 0.05) the levels of estrogens. The further findings of the present study showed that E (deconjugated form) was only detected in the buffalo's meat (15.8 ± 1.9 ng/L). These data suggest that although meat is one of the valuable nutrient sources for humans, there are, however, increasing concerns about the safety of meat due to the excessive presence of steroid hormones.

This study aims to determine the level of growth hormone given feed supplement and anabolic growth promoter. This research was an experimental research using Complete Random Design (CRD) with three factors. There were feed supplement, anabolic growth promoter, and sampling time. There were 20 young male Bali cattle and they were taken care intensively, divided into 4 group, there were control, feed supplement, anabolic growth promoter, and the combination of feed supplement and anabolic growth promoter for five months, and measured the level of growth hormone each month. The level of growth hormone was detected by using competitive Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay method. The result of the research showed that feed supplement and anabolic growth promoter increased the level of bali cattle growth hormone where feed supplement with anabolic growth promoter (P1G1) was not significantly different than given feed supplement without anabolic growth promoter (P1G0). Providing feed supplement optimally by farmers is highly recommended.

An Overview of the Glucocorticoids’ Pathways in the Environment and Their Removal Using Conventional Wastewater Treatment Systems

Numerous micropollutants, especially endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs), can pollute natural aquatic environments causing great concern for human and ecosystem health. While most of the conversation revolves around estrogen and androgen, glucocorticoids (GCs) are also prevalent in natural waters. Despite the fact that GCs play a crucial role in both inflammatory and immunologic development activities, they are also detected in natural waters and considered as one of the EDCs. Although many researchers have mentioned the adverse effect of GCs on aquatic organisms, a complete management technology to remove these pollutants from surface and coastal waters is yet to be established. In the current study, six glucocorticoids (prednisone, prednisolone, cortisone, cortisol, dexamethasone, and 6R-methylprednisolone) have been selected according to their higher detection frequency in environmental waters. The concentration of selected GCs ranged from 0.05 ng/L to 433 ng/L and their removal efficiency ranged from 10% to 99% depending on the water source and associated removal technologies. Although advanced technologies are available for achieving successful removal of GCs, associated operational and economic considerations make implementation of these processes unsustainable. Further studies are necessary to resolve the entry routes of GCs compounds into the surface water or drinking water permanently as well as employ sustainable detection and removal technologies.
