Presence of Antideoxyribonucleic Acid Antibody in Patients with Hyperthyroidism of Graves’ Disease*

Abstract: In 16 untreated patients with hyperthyroidism due to Graves' disease, serum antidouble stranded DNA antibody, measured by RIA, was positive (greater than 20 U/ml) in 14. In methimazole-treated patients with T3-suppressible thyroid uptake, anti-DNA antibody was found in 9% (3 of 35). The frequency of positive tests in methimazole-treated patients with T3-nonsuppressible thyroid uptake and in surgically treated patients was 24% (5 of 21) and 57% (4 of 7), respectively. Among anti-DNA antibody-negative (less than… Show more

“…Antibodies against a number of thyroid antigens are present in the sera of these patients, including thyroglobulin and the thyroid microsomal antigen (3,4). Other antigens of lesser or uncertain importance include the second colloid antigen (3), tubulin (5), DNA (6), and au-toimmune thyroid disease-related antigen I (7). Antibodies against the microsomal antigen, which is expressed on the cell surface (8,9), are believed to be of greater importance than those against thyroglobulin in the pathogenesis ofHashimoto's thyroiditis.…”

“…It is well acknowledged that thyroid dysfunction may be at tributed to autoimmune processes. Thyroid disorders have been reported in conjunction with systemic lupus erythematosus, progressive systemic sclerosis and Sjo gren's syndrome [24][25][26], Elevated anti-DNA antibodies were described among patients with thyroid dysfunctions [27,28]. These connections lead us to a conclusion that autoimmune thyroiditis and PPH might have a common autoimmune extraction.…”
