“…The concentrations of FMs reported here are comparable to different PCPs analyzed in other Antarctic areas: concentrations of up to 88 ng L − 1 of UV-filters, preservatives, antimicrobials and Bisphenol A were detected in the coastal seawater near McMurdo and Scott bases (Emnet et al, 2015). Similar levels of several PCPs were reported in streams and ponds of the Northern Antarctic Peninsula (total concentrations ranging from 145 to 370 ng L − 1 ), but with the highest proportions corresponding to organophosphate flame retardants and alkylphenols (Esteban et al, 2016). Personal Care Products are emerging pollutants whose distribution in the Antarctic and remote environments is still largely unknown. Among PCPs, long-lasting and stable Fragrance Materials were selected to perform a first pilot study on their occurrence in the coastal surface seawater of Terra Nova Bay in the Ross Sea, Antarctica. Ambrofix, Amyl Salicylate, Benzyl Salicylate, Hexyl Salicylate, Lemonile and Okoumal were detected for the first time in Antarctic natural seawater, and reached total concentrations up to 100ngL. Treated discharges from the Italian research station Mario Zucchelli (MZS) contain FMs, however concentrations in nearby Tethys Bay increase during the seasonal melt of the sea ice and its snow cover: variability in emissions and distribution, as well as a contribution from atmospheric (long or short-range) transport were hypothesized.

Antarctica and the Southern Ocean are unique natural laboratories where organisms adapted to extreme environmental conditions have evolved in isolation for millions of years. These unique biotic communities on Earth are facing complex climatic and environmental changes. Terrestrial ecosystems in the Antarctic Peninsula Region (APR) have experienced the highest rate of climate warming and, being the most impacted by human activities, are facing the greatest risk of detrimental changes. This review provides an overview of the most recent findings on how biotic communities in terrestrial ecosystems of the Antarctic Peninsula Region (APR) are responding and will likely respond to further environmental changes and direct anthropogenic impacts. Knowledge gained from studies on relatively simple terrestrial ecosystems could be very useful in predicting what may happen in much more complex ecosystems in regions with less extreme temperature changes. The rapid warming of the APR has led to the retreat of glaciers, the loss of snow and permafrost and the increase of ice-free areas, with a consequent enhancement of soil-forming processes, biotic communities, and food web complexity. However, most human activity is concentrated in APR coastal ice-free areas and poses many threats to terrestrial ecosystems such as environmental pollution or disturbances to soilcommunities and wildlife. People who work or visit APR may inadvertently introduce alien organisms and/or spread native species to spatially isolated ice-free areas. The number of introduced non-indigenous species and xenobiotic compounds in the APR is likely to be greater than currently documented, and several biosecurity and monitoring activities are therefore suggested to Antarctic national scientific programs and tourism operators to minimize the risk of irreversible loss of integrity by the unique terrestrial ecosystems of APR.

Research examining the occurrence of endocrine disruptors (ED) in the marine environment has substantially increased. These contaminants have been observed in several environmental compartments and matrices, and they may cause severe adverse effects in humans and ecosystems. In this study more than 240 papers investigating the analytical developments regarding the analysis on ED in environmental matrices and the occurrence of these compounds were critically evaluated. Modern sample preparation procedures aiming the use of minimal sample manipulation, minimal amount of solvents and energy according to the Green Chemistry principles are widely used. The ED in marine environments occurs in trace concentrations and their quantification still represents a challenge. The effects of these contaminants in marine ecosystems are poorly understood. However, due to their large use, it is predicted that new analytical developments to deal with ED contamination will promote a large increase in the number of scientific publications in the near future. Regulations and mitigation measures for the presence of these contaminants in the environment are still scarce and need to be quickly implemented to reduce potential future adverse effects on ecosystem services of coastal environments. Cotrim et al. (2016) 300 RESUMO Pesquisas que examinam a ocorrência de interferentes endócrinos (IE) no ambiente marinho têm aumentado substancialmente. Estes contaminantes podem causar efeitos adversos em seres humanos e nos ecossistemas e têm sido observados em vários compartimentos e matrizes ambientais. Neste estudo, mais de 240 trabalhos que relataram o desenvolvimento analítico de IE em diversas matrizes e a ocorrência destes compostos no ambiente marinho foram criticamente avaliados. Procedimentos de preparo de amostra, visando a mínima manipulação, a mínima quantidade de solventes e energia de acordo com os princípios de Química Verde estão sendo amplamente utilizados. Os IE em ambientes marinhos ocorrem em concentrações traço e sua quantificação ainda representa um grande desafio. Como resultado, os efeitos desses contaminantes em ecossistemas marinhos ainda são mal compreendidos. No entanto, devido ao amplo uso destes compostos é previsto que novos desenvolvimentos analíticos para a determinação de IE irão promover um grande aumento no número de publicações científicas no futuro. Regulações e medidas mitigadoras para a ocorrência destes contaminantes ainda são bastante reduzida e precisam ser rapidamente implementadas para reduzir os futuros potenciais efeitos adversos nos serviços ecossistêmicos dos ecossistemas costeiros.
