Presence of hepcidin-25 in biological fluids: Bile, ascitic and pleural fluids

Abstract: We provide clear evidence that hepcidin-25 is present in bile, saliva, pleural and ascitic fluids. Hepcidin is likely to play a role here in innate immunity.

“…Salivary metal levels are quite variable and are believed to be affected by diet [3], salivary flow rates [2], occupational exposure [4], and quantity of metal-binding salivary proteins [5]. Analyses of salivary metal content has been related to exposure to toxic metals [2,4], metal-leaching dental devices [6], or the relationship to disease states [7,8].…”

“…Saliva contains many proteins involved in nutritional immunity [5,10,12]. Calprotectin is the classic example of a metal-sequestering protein [10] that binds manganese, zinc, and iron with nanomolar to picomolar affinity, and inhibits microbial growth by disrupting superoxide dismutase function [13,14].…”

“…Hepcidin is in bile and may act along with α-defensins against gut microflora (11) . Arnold et al (12) demonstrate the presence of hepcidin in pleural and ascitic fluid with unknown biological activity. Shike et al (13) showed that in white bass liver, infection with the fish pathogen Streptococcus iniae increased hepcidin mRNA expression 4500-fold.…”
