Presence of Multiple “ Helicobacter heilmannii ” Strains in an Individual Suffering from Ulcers and in His Two Cats

Abstract: Circumstantial evidence suggests that “Helicobacter heilmannii” infection is an example of zoonosis. The presence of “H. heilmannii” strains in a human subject with acute gastric erosions, in his two cats, and in two unrelated cats was analyzed, and the genetic relatedness of the human and feline strains was assessed. A 580-bp, PCR-amplified sequence of “H. heilmannii” urease B gene (ureB) obtained from biopsies from the human subject and his two cats was restricted withAluI and cloned for sequencing. Analysis… Show more

“…There is evidence that a number of gastric Helicobacter spp. can be transferred from dogs [73], as it was shown from cats [74], to their owners. In larger series Candidatus H. suis, H. felis, H. bizzozeronii, H. salomonis, Candidatus H. bovis, as well as formally unnamed Helicobacteraceae were detected in human samples.…”

“…PCR products can subsequently be cloned and sequenced or analyzed by restriction fragment length polymorphism to identify the species and strain. 75 Electron microscopy has been advocated to differentiate Helicobacter species on the basis of typical morphologic criteria. “…94,95 Only recently, an identical ''H heilmannii'' organism identified by PCR and urease-B gene sequencing has been found in a patient and 1 of his cats. 75 The possible risk of transmission of large GHLO to human patients is rather small, considering the greater than 90% prevalence in dogs and cats and the rare (Ͻ0.5%) occurrence in humans. Notwithstanding, proper hygienic control is necessary to keep the risk to a minimum.…”
