A study on the diversity and distribution of different orchid species in Nokrek Biosphere Reserve (NBR) was carried out from 2009 to 2015 with an objective to assess the threatened plants present in protected areas. A total of 127 species of orchids belonging to 56 genera were identified from NBR; out of which 94 are epiphytes or lithophytes, 32 are terrestrial, and one species is mycoheterotrophic. Dendrobium (21 spp.) is the most dominant genus in terms of the species composition, followed by Bulbophyllum (8 spp.), Coelogyne (8 spp.), Liparis (7 spp.), Cymbidium (5 spp.), and Pinalia (4 spp.). Other dominant genera include Aerides, Agrostophyllum, Cleisostoma, Habenaria, Micropera, Paphiopedilum, and Pholidota which were represented by three species each. A total of 10 genera were recorded that were represented by two species include Acampe, Cryptochilus, Dendrolirium, Gastrochilus, Oberonia, Peristylus, Phalaenopsis, Pleione, Spathoglottis, and Vanda. Of the recorded species from NBR, the Gastrochilus calceolaris is assessed by the IUCN Red List as ‘Critically Endangered’, Paphiopedilum insigne and P. venustum are ‘Endangered’, P. Hirsutissimum as ‘Vulnerable’, and Dendrobium aphyllum as ‘Least Concern’. It has been observed that at the higher elevations, subtropical and temperate forests provide a conducive environment for the orchids to occupy a pristine ecosystem because the temperature and maximum humidity recorded in those areas is lower in comparison to lower regions. This research finding recommends the designation of Nokrek hill as a permanent orchid sanctuary for germplasm collection and conservation, as it could better guarantee the survival of threatened plants and reduce human interventions in the forested zone.

Assam is the second largest state of NorthEast India and treasure trove of Indian orchids. Dibrugarh District is in the located in the eastern part of the state with rich native orchid species. This report is the outcome of our intensive field studies carried out during 2006-2011. We have chosen opportunistic method to cover all representative areas of different habitat. We have surveyed the area covering all the seasons of the year. For microhabitat structure randomly selected quadrat of 5mx5m were laid in the field and noted down all the features. In this study a total of 114 Orchid species under 54 genera have been recorded from the district. The study revealed 29 species as terrestrial and the rest 85 species are epiphytic. Among the terrestrial genus Zeuxine is found as ecologically and taxonomically co mplex group of Orch idaceae. During this field study, 6 species of the genus Zeuxine were recorded viz. Z. clandestine; Z. glandulosa; Z. goodyeroides; Z. longilabris; Z. nervosa and Z. Strateumatica. The present study envisages the threat and status of these species with conservation recommendation. Moreover, this is the first attempt to establish the taxonomic identificat ion to workout currently accepted botanical names of the genus with its ecological status, voucher specimen numbers, habitat, phenology and distribution in this district.

Deforestation Impacts on Diversity of Orchids with Inference on the Conservation Initiatives: Malaysia Case Study

Monitoring the impact of anthropogenic and naturogenic threats on orchid community through diversity, taxonomy and conservation studies is necessary. Reintroduction of these species to their natural habitat associates with their resilience, selection of suitable trees and sites for regeneration and restoration efforts, drives the conservation initiative. Upon obtaining an accurate estimate of the diversity for genetic resource conservation, integrative methods of classical morphological taxonomy, anatomy (micromorphology), and molecular genetics are crucial to solve the taxonomic uncertainty. Changes in microclimatic conditions and habitat structures are the key determinants of both epiphytic and terrestrial orchids assemblages following disturbance. Any assessments of biodiversity and ecosystem service must include variable forest types and management regimes to provide impartial views on the effect of forest and ecological disturbance on the orchid community. Accordingly, a plant-microbial ecology study should be included to study the extent of human-induced climatic variability towards the orchid diversification.
