Presentations of patients of poisoning and predictors of poisoning-related fatality: Findings from a hospital-based prospective study

Abstract: Background: Poisoning is a significant public health problem worldwide and is one of the most common reasons for visiting emergency departments (EDs), but factors that help to predict overall poisoningrelated fatality have rarely been elucidated. Using 1512 subjects from a hospital-based study, we sought to describe the demographic and clinical characteristics of poisoning patients and to identify predictors for poisoning-related fatality.

“…W odniesieniu do postaci trucizny badanie wskazało głównie na płyny (związki fosforoorganiczne, pyretroidy) i proszki (fosforek glinu). Istotną rolę w diagnostyce odgrywają parametry życiowe, gdyż stanowią one główny komponent zespołów toksycznych [31,32]. Większość wcześniejszych badań koncentrowała się na relacji pomiędzy danym rodzajem trucizny a związanym z nią rokowaniem.…”

“…The liquid and powder type of poisons were mainly encountered in the study that comprised of aluminum phosphide in case of powder and Organophosphorus, pyrethroids in case of liquid poisons. Vital signs play an important role in diagnosis since they are the key components of toxic syndromes [31,32]. Most of the previous research focused on the relationship between a single specific poison and its prognostic factors.…”

“…7,8,16 In the above-mentioned study by Chien et al, mortality among men was 2.3 fold higher than women. In that study, when reason for poisoning was considered in relation to gender, it was seen that mortality rate due to unintentional poisoning was higher in men compared to women, whereas mortality related to intentional poisoning was higher in women compared to men.…”
