Show more

“…Several areas of Cerrado s. str. have been converted into pasture and crop lands, the semideciduous forest has been fragmented along the Velhas river, and the deciduous forest usually associated with carbonate rocks is directly impacted by mining that causes disturbances or suppression of the vegetation (Fleischer 2006;de Deus et al 2013;Auler & Piló 2015). There are also several lakes in the Karst region, harbouring many species of aquatic macrophytes.…”

“…In view of all this, a system of conservation units (UCs) is gradually being implemented. Some important places where Warming collected are already in UCs of integral protection, as the Parque Estadual do Sumidouro (IEF-MG 2019), but others, such as Lapa do Baú and Lapa Vermelha (Warming 1908), are in UCs of sustainable use and in private areas dealing with the threats from economic activities (Herrman et al 1998;de Deus et al 2013). Recently, the region was included in the Ramsar Convention, as a wetland of international importance, due to the expressive presence of endemic species and migratory birds (Ramsar Convention 2017).…”

“…The place is a private property inserted in a conservation unit of sustainable use (APA Carste de Lagoa Santa), and although the surrounding area has been completely converted to cultivated land and pasture, the massif is relatively preserved. However, there is an intense limestone mining activity in the region, and several outcrops have been destroyed (de Deus et al 2013). According to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria and the guidelines (IUCN 2012(IUCN , 2016, the species can tentatively be classified as Critically Endangered (CR), due to its small area of occupancy, estimated to be 4 km 2 , and the fact that it is known from a single small population [B1ab(iii) + 2ab(iii); D].…”

“…There are issues in common among the data collected, such as the mischaracterization of local traditions after the sites in Peirópolis and Carste de Lagoa Santa were opened to tourism, deficient infrastructure for the surrounding community itself (paving and lighting of roads, public transport, poorly planned septic tanks and irregular waste disposal areas) and dispute among mining companies, local residents and managers of conservation units -CUs (which can be seen in Figure 1). There are also problems related to youth unemployment and exodus, water and soil contamination and housing in risk areas (DEUS et al, 1997;LOPES, 2008;CARVALHO;FERNANDES, 2010;PADOAN;SOUZA, 2013 apud SILVA;COSENZA, 2019a). The Gandarela Basin, in the municipality of Rio Acima, whose main fossils are vegetables and stromatolites aged between 53 and 23 million years old, is experiencing conflicts resulting from the divergence of interests in the use and appropriation of the natural environment among mining, society and CUs.…”
