“…Our mixed methods research shows us that abstinence and heterosexuality continues to be emphasized in sex education in Ohio in damaging ways for SGD youth (Clonan-Roy et al, 2021;Naser et al, 2020). With research emphasizing how detrimental SBSE can be for SGD youth, it is important to also examine the adaptive competencies, which allow these youth to survive in these spaces and not internalize such harmful messages to the self.…”

“…In the HRC survey (2018), only 13% of youth reported hearing positive messages about being SGD in their school (Human Rights Campaign, 2018). One area that is uniquely inhibiting is school based sex education (Clonan‐Roy et al, 2021; Naser et al, 2020; SBSE; 2021 citations deleted for blind review). The paucity of relevant, appropriate, and affirming sexual health information provided to SGD youth in the school setting has been linked to health disparities for SGD youth, including higher rates of sexually transmitted infections, HIV, and teen pregnancy (Bodnar & Tornello, 2019; Mayer et al, 2014).…”

“…Additionally, including sexual consent education before adolescents become sexually active may have the potential to improve primary prevention of sexual assault (Willis et al, 2019). Despite these benefits, a recent review of 16 health education textbooks provided to youth in the United States found that these texts perpetuated rape culture, rarely discussed consent, and suggested more often girls were responsible for preventing sexual assault (Clonan-Roy et al, 2021). Given that sexual assault prevention in the K-12 system is not mandated in all 50 states (Guttmacher Institute, 2020), and the information included in these health courses may be inadequate to address some sexual assault risk factors (Willis et al, 2019), this could explain the consistently high rates in sexual assault across the years.…”
