Pressure- and Temperature-Induced Valence Tautomeric Interconversion in ao-Dioxolene Adduct of a Cobalt-Tetraazamacrocycle Complex

Abstract: An electronic switch at the molecular level has been realized by using a class of ionic compounds of the formula [Co(L)(diox)]Y (L = tetraazamacrocyclic ligand, Y = mononegative anion). Such compounds undergo temperature- and pressure-induced intramolecular one-electron transfer equilibria. The transition temperature of interconversion varies with the nature of the counterions Y (Y = PF6, BPh4, I). Surprisingly the effect of the anion on the transition temperature is not only governed by its volume but also by… Show more

“…We have investigated the influence of pressure on the temperature dependence of the valence tautomeric interconversion between the catecholato (cat) and semiquinonato (sq) forms, [Co III (L)(cat)] þ 4 [Co II (L)(sq)] þ , in the system [Co(cth)(phendiox)]PF 6 $H 2 O [52]. It has been inferred from crystal structure determination that the volume of the unit cell shrinks by more than 4% on going from the paramagnetic high-spin [Co II (L) (sq)] þ species to the diamagnetic low-spin [Co III (L) (cat)] þ species, which is far more than can be accounted for by thermal contraction.…”

“…14, the transition curves are shifted to higher temperature and become more gradual with increasing pressure. When the pressure reaches the value of 0.74 GPa, the compound is practically diamagnetic at room temperature [52]. These findings are very similar to those obtained from pressure effect studies on SCO compounds as described above.…”

“…As observed for spincrossover systems, the process is essentially entropy driven, the Co III species being favored at low temperatures and the Co II -ones at high temperatures. [23][24][25] It is well established that the transition between the two forms can be also induced by pressure changes 26,27 or by optical irradiation. The latter aspect, which makes these The first example of valence tautomerism was reported by Buchanan and Pierpont in 1980.…”
