“…The trend of the exchange interaction strength in the alkaline earth analogs, A 14 MnPn 11 (A=Ca, Sr, Ba; Pn=Sb, Bi), is understood according to the simple free electron isotropic RKKY theory (4). A study of pressure-induced magnetic ordering in Sr 14 MnAs 11 (10) provides further support for this model, indicating that the magnetic interaction between the localized moments is mediated by conduction electrons. The study also shows that the size of the metal cation and pnictogen element has a key role in determining the electrical and magnetic properties of the compound by changing the overlap of the anion wave functions resulting in a modified energy band gap.…”

“…From the point of view of Zintl phases, this structure type is electronically positioned at the borderline between the intermetallic and insulating valence compounds (9). A detailed electrical resistivity study shows that the compounds can be categorized as either a narrow gap semiconductor or a metal depending on the pnictogen element (3,4,10) and the transport properties are closely coupled to the magnetic ordering of the compounds (11À13).…”

“…In particular, it provides a simple picture of the pressure induced ferromagnetic transition observed in Sr 14 MnAs 11 45 , which seems to be accompanied by a semicondutor-metal transition, and was previously interpreted as signature of a RKKY type of magnetic interaction. Compressing the AeMPn structure causes an increase in the interation between the MnBi 4 units, with the corresponding increase of the hopping probability of the localized valence band holes.…”

“…Selected samples for the XPS measurements of both Yb14 MnSb11 and Yb14 ZnSb 11 were characterized by comparing lattice parameters determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction to previously published results (references 7, 12 and 45), and also by magneticsusceptibility measurements. XPS measurements were performed in the UltraESCA endstation of Beamline 7.0.1.…”
