Pressure on Anterior Region of Palate during Thumb-Sucking

Abstract: Measurement of the pressure applied to the anterior region of the palate and incisor region of the mandible during thumb-sucking was carried out 3 female children. A polyethylene bag embedded with a high-sensitivity small pressure sensor was fixed on the ventral side of the thumb so that the baroreceptor could be interposed between the thumb and palate during thumb-sucking. The children were allowed to perform habitual thumb-sucking, and the resulting pressure signals were detected with a high-response dynamic… Show more

“…Non‐nutritive sucking habits may result in the development of physiological imbalance during growth in addition to deviations from a normal swallowing pattern (Cozza et al, 2007 ; Katz et al, 2004 ; Melink et al, 2010 ; Vazquez‐Nava et al, 2006 ; Warren & Bishara, 2002 ) due to thumb‐sucking pressure (Yokota et al, 2007 ) and tongue anterior thrusting leading to longer‐term problems especially present in children (Melink et al, 2010 ; Vazquez‐Nava et al, 2006 ).…”

“…After treatment, significant decrease in maxillary protraction (SNA angle) was obtained, since the palatal crib helps in relief the direct pressure on the anterior region of palate, which may reach to 4.52 kg (36) and considered larger than normal tongue pressure 1.57 kg (37) causing correction of protracted maxilla.…”
