Presuppositions, implicatures, and contextual equivalence

Abstract: Maximize Presupposition! (MP), as originally proposed in Heim (Semantik: Ein internationales Handbuch der zeitgenössischen Forschung, pp. 487–535, 1991) and developed in subsequent works, offers an account of the otherwise mysterious unassertability of a variety of sentences. At the core of MP is the idea that speakers are urged to use a sentence ψ over a sentence ϕ if ψ contributes the same new information as ϕ, yet carries a stronger presupposition. While MP has been refined in many ways throughout the years… Show more

“…In section 3, we discuss variation among SI triggers in English and offer a syntactic proposal that accounts for these behaviors. In section 4, we extend our analysis to cases involving ignorance inferences discussed by Marty & Romoli (2021). Using additive particles, we show that it must be possible to generate ignorance inferences in embedded positions, contrary to the tenets of Meyer's (2013) "Matrix K" theory which takes ignorance inferences to be generated by exh above a doxastic modal operator adjoined to assertive clauses.…”

“…x∈X A(x) is the truth degree of the sentence "there exists at least one element in A". The existential import is a philosophical concept discussed in several publications, especially in those concerning the study of Aristotle square (see [28], [29], [30], [31], [32] for some examples) Traditionally, it refers to the consideration that the sentence "All A's are B" has sense if "A's exist". †) In the theory of intermediate quantifiers, S Very corresponds to the quantifier "most", i.e.…”

“…While these terms are used to describe the same phenomenon, they come with different theoretical assumptions regarding status and properties of these inferences, what mechanism derives them, and accordingly, how they fit into the taxonomy of non‐literal meaning components of natural language. In view of the more complex empirical picture arising for presuppositions and implicatures, these questions have been revisited in the recent literature (Anvari, 2018; Marty, 2017; Marty & Romoli, 2020b; Spector & Sudo, 2017).…”
